My co-worker and I are wondering if there are any studies looking at SNS and bacteria growth, especially with formula supplementation. We frequently send home10 cc syringe/5 french feeding tubes with parents to use for late pretermers or non latching infants. Of course, we encourage parents to seek private LC assist for babies who continue to have trouble latching, but we have all seen parents finger or SNS feed way too long. Has anyone advised using steambags to sanitize the 5 french tubes and syringes, or is it not indicated? How can we decrease the risk of bacteria overgrowth?

Thanks,
