Dear Linda,
About your friend's 5 1/2 mo baby's sudden refusal to bf on one side. It's
possible that the baby's sensitive taste buds are detecting the onset of a
breast infection. The sodium level in breastmilk rises with mastitis. The
mother needs to have her breast checked for lumps, etc. It would help if she
kept trying to nurse on both sides to keep her supply up. One trick she
could try is to gently slide the baby over her lap (without lifting or
turning him around) to nurse on the affected side after he finishes nursing
on the preferred side.

I just joined Lactnet a few days ago, after reading about it on the latest
issue of L______. I've been a LLL Leader since 1991. The greatest joys of
my life are named Charlie (11 yrs today!), Greg (8 yrs) and Rachel (2 yrs).

Keep up the good work with this wonderful circle of support and information.
