I went to a conference last year on postnatal depression. Two speakers:
Prof. Channi Kumar, Prof of Postnatal Psychiatry, Maudsley Hospital,
London, UK and Dr. Suzanne Steinberg, Associate Prof. in Psychiatry,
Montreal, Canada said they prescribed Prozac in BFeeding mothers and were
satisfied it was safe for their babies. It would be
better to see it written up but perhaps the Dr. concerned could contact one
of these people to get more info!
Concerning tricyclics:have you seen the article by Anne Buist and Helen
JANSOn in British J.of Psychiatry [1995,167,370-373 Effect of Exposure to
Dothiepih and Northiaden in Breast Milk on Child Development] ? This study
compared the cognitive development of preschool children(3-5) who had been
exposed to antidepressant medication through BF in their 1st year of life,
with children of depressed & non depressed women who had not breast fed
while on anti depressants. They found that the babies who had been breastfed
had the highest cognitive scores! Those children exposed to higher levels of
dothiepin had higher cognitive scores(this did not relate to higher maternal
educational scores) They wondered whether this was because they were more
adequately treated, recovered more completely and were able to"engage in a
positive active relationship " with their infants.
