Hi Naomi,
I can't think of a reason for inducing a mom with a history of seizures
early, unless there is pregnancy induced hypertension and the doctor is
afraid of the lowered seizure thresh-hold if the mom progresses to
pre-eclampsia/eclampsia. If the mom is having many seizures, the baby
might be better off born a little early than exposed to the changes in
blood flow and lowered oxygen levels during and after a seizure (effects
on the fetus can last for 45 mins after a 60 second tonic-clonic
seizure). But if mom is not having seizures, I can't see the point.

Early induction increases the risk of iatrogenic prematurity, increases
the risk of Cesarean for failed induction, and increases the mother's
stress and pain over that of a normal labor.

I would hesitate to allow this unless my doctor could make a good case
for it from the scientific literature.

One thing to be aware of is that some anticonvulsants increase the risk
of birth defects to about 6%, and that even having epilepsy increases
birth defect risks slightly too. The mom will need some extra help and
support if her baby has a birth defect.
