Dear Lactnuts,
It has been a lo-o-ng time since I last logged on, but I have continued to
lurk. My name is Dina Ovando-Brown and I am a BSN/RN of 14 years (has it
really been that long...)with a background in maternal/child health and
emergency medicine.I am also a certified childbirth educator and give
classes in English and Spanish. I took the IBCLE in 7/99 and passed!! Of
course it ONLY took me 4 years to accumulate my hours!! I had 2 wonderful
mentors, Susan Aldana and Kathy Warmbier who generously gave of their time
and wisdom. I work part-time in an OB Medi-Cal clinic where the majority of
our clients are Hispanic, then African-American and a lot of teens. I am
fluent in Spanish (grew up speaking it and the primary language at home with
my parents)and would be very interested in helping give a Spanish intensive
at ILCA along with the cultural ramifications with breastfeeding. I am happy
to help with this online as needed. I have been fortunate in that I have
been able to sling my children and take them to work. They have been good
little workers in modeling good health and dispositions as exclusively
breastfed children.I have three children ages 5 1/2, 2 and 2 months, it has
been a wild ride!!! All 3 breastfed, actually I haven't stopped since the
first!! I forgot what a non-white, non-cotton and without a flap bra looks
like! I give prenatal classes, postpartum consults and do rounds on the
postpartum floor. It is a challenge, but I now have a M/C educator that is
also an IBCLC to help at the hospital. My last child has been a
non-pooper(every 2-4 days) from the beginning and is gaining weight well,
but did bear some extra watching at the start. So I can relate with the
other posts regarding this little quirk.
Thank-you everyone for Lacnet, it has been a source of encouragement,
learning and humor when as a mother of 3 children under 6 and with little or
odd bits of time for professional growth, I can hop on the computer at
midnight and still grow in that area.
Sincerely,
Dina Ovando-Brown RN, CCE, IBCLC
