Hi All! After a long break offline, nice to be back.
There is one thing I wanted to add about test weighing. I definitely use my
scale at every consult, I also usually see problems, and the once in a while
it is a normal situation, the mother is always thrilled and empowered to see
those numbers go up all from her!

The is one point that was not mentioned why I think the weights are crucial.
I have been called in a few times on cases where someone thinks there is a
problem with the breastfeeding. Of course this is always the first thing to
"blame". It is only after I go in and can document how much milk the baby
transferred and that things were going perfectly, or normal, or not bad
enough to warrant whatever poor weight gain is happening, that either then I
can write a letter to the Pediatrician saying look into other issues, run
blood tests, etc- because I have seen the baby transfer x amount of milk and
the mother reports this is indicative of a "usual" feed.

One case I remember the most was a twin who had gained beautifully till 3
months, and then almost stopped gaining until 5 months. Everyone said she
just did not have enough to feed both at that age- after all, they were not
"newborns" anymore.
Well, I documented a transfer of 100 cc- which was not low enough to cause
that kind of a drop on the chats- even if maybe slightly low- and sure
enough, the baby had a UTI and ended up in the hospital the next morning.
So, all weights get written in my files, and I feel they are a crucial piece
in the puzzle!

Warmly,
Jessica Billowitz, IBCLC
