When pumping, our moms use food grade feeding syringes to collect the
initial small amounts of colostrum that can collect around mom's nipple,
inside the flange...if allowed to flow into the collection bottle, these
small volumes are only enough to coat the bottle, not enough to collect in
the bottle. However, when aspirated from around the nipple in the flange, a
fair amount of colostrum can be collected. Our problem is that the feeding
syringes are not sterile and our NICU does not want to use the colostrum
collected in this fashion for our very premature kids...the ones for whom an
ml is alot...an issue for us is that our sterile syringes do not have a snug
cap. I was wondering what other hospitals do in this situation. Thanks.
