The New Mothers' Breastfeeding Promotion and Protection Act was introduced
into Congress on March 24, 1998. The bill is sponsored by Rep Carolyn Maloney
(D-NY). The bill number is H.R. 3531. There are six main points covered in the
bill which is primarily aimed at protecting breastfeeding women from
discrimination in the workplace. Rep Maloney's office already has a summary of
the bill which you can request from her office:

She also has several other pages related to the bill and appropriate for
circulation. You can obtain the full text of the bill and track its progress
at the following site:

The bill must now generate more co-sponsors and significant support. Therefore
it is important for all of us to contact our federal house representative's
office and ask him or her to co-sponsor the bill. If they will not do this,
ask if they will vote for the bill. If they refuse to do this, please find out
why and relay this information to NABA (National Alliance for Breastfeeding
Advocacy at [log in to unmask])) so we may contact Rep Maloney and inform her
where barriers lie. We also need to secure stories of breastfeeding women who
have been discriminated again in the workplace and pass these along to Rep
Maloney's office. In addition she is looking for reports of women using breast
pumps that were unable to meet their needs for maintaining a full milk supply
for their baby.

Several organizations have already endorsed the bill:
American Academy of Pediatrics
National Association of WIC Directors
ILCA (International Lactation Consultant Association)
La Leche League International
National Alliance for Breastfeeding Advocacy (NABA)

If you belong to a professional organization, you may wish to ask them to
consider endorsing this bill. If you have questions direct them to Marsha
Walker ([log in to unmask]) or Barbara Heiser, NABA's Washington contact and
point person in touch with Rep Maloney's office ([log in to unmask]).
