"I have to admit, when I first read the IBLCE Code of Ethics clause
you quoted above, I felt that this was written with the US situation
primarily in mind and no consideration was given to different systems
in other countries. What was the consultation like when the Code of
Ethics was written? Was it just done by only Americans?"

I am currently on the ethics committee of the IBLCE. I was not on the board
when the original code of ethics was written, but the board is (and always
has been )comprised of people from all over the world. Currently on the
ethics committee, there are people from the US, Canada, Australia, and the
Netherlands. However, any decision about the Code of Ethics or changes in
it must be approved by the entire board, which includes representation from
Asia, UK, and Central America as well. Trust that those who are not from
the US certainly let us know how to be sure any changes we make are
international in scope, and not just pertaining to the US. We realize that
this diversity of representation is essential to understanding.

We will be discussing some of the same issues about ethics this week at our
committee meeting. It has been very enlightening to read all the Lactnet
discussions and responses. There are many issues to ponder and discuss as
we clarify our definitions of ethical practice and our profession.
