Greetings Friends,
I am so distressed about the latest information out about the *wonderful*
benefits (????) of pain relief in labor. There is a report on Intelihealth
today about this. It was presented in Dallas today at the annual meeting of
the American Society of Anesthesiologists, explaining how medical advances
have made anesthesia safer. Give me a break, or better yet give me a barf
bag!!
It is difficult enough for women to think about childbirth without everyone
telling them to take drugs. Just as women in this country have few role
models for breastfeeding, there are fewer role models for drugfree births. In
the movies and on tv, women are shown in labor screaming in agony. They are
totally convinced of the safety of the drugs to mom and baby. How can women
even begin to feel empowered to have a drugfree birth when *everyone is doing
it*. It just makes me so mad, I believe we are doing an injustice to women,
when the medical profession pushes the drugs. Then we all wonder why so many
people are drug addicted in this world.
Pretty soon, they will discover ways to give the anesthesia during the
pregnancy, so we really feel nothing.
Very sad on a beautiful fall day on Long Island.
