Dear all:

I know this is not quite breastfeeding related, but I can't help myself. Since so many of us do run
into women who do have suffer from postpartum depression, I thought I'd share with you some
new research that my husband picked up at a workshop for psychoanalysts and psychotherapists
doing couples therapy. Apparently there is new research conducted by Tiffany Fields, PhD that
compared women who received antidepressants and women who received 15 min/day of massage
from their partners. It turns out that the massage was equal to or superior to the antidepressants
and women suffered fewer relapses than when treatment was withdrawn. I haven't read the
original articles, but my husband thought they'd probably be in Development Pychology or a
similar journal. Maybe Cynthia Mojab is familiar with this work.

I'm always telling partners at my prenatal classes to continue those massage techniques they learn
for the delivery and apply them when mom gets tense while breastfeeding - showing them the
"chicken wing arm", the "death grip", and the "shoulder droop" that are such common sources of
tension while learning to breast feed. Now I have another reason for partners to do this!

Best regards,

Susan E. Burger, MHS, PhD, IBCLC
