Toni - I have a client who went through menopause in her late teens and is
currently nursing a 7 month old adopted boy. She is 29 and had one pregnancy
several years ago which only lasted 8 weeks. In spite of taking Logynon
(oestrogen replacement) she was able to bring in a small breastmilk supply
before her adoptive son was born (about 200ml/24 hours) with frequent
pumping and medication with sulpiride. She started inducing lactation about
6 weeks before the baby arrived and froze any EBM obtained. Baby was put to
the breast very shortly after delivery, was exclusively breastfed for the
first four days and then received breastfeedings with supplements (using up
the frozen EBM first, and then supplementing with formula). I tried to keep
her focus on the wonderful properties of human milk, regardless of amount,
and the emotional benefits of nursing as opposed to breast*feeding*. In
spite of this she went through a sad time when she realized she wouldn't be
able to provide *all* of the baby's milk herself. But she did keep on! She
recently contacted me to say she just *loves* breastfeeding, and so does the
baby!

Is your client hoping to induce lactation before the baby arrives? It's
very hard work, and my client came very close to abandoning the whole thing,
but is so glad now that she didn't! Best wishes!
