Dear Lacnetters-

I'm needing guidance concerning a six month old infant who is exclusively
breastfed. This infant presented with very loose stools containing mucous
and gross blood. The infant was taken to the doctor and a bowel biopsy
revealed severely swollen lymph nodes, inflammation and bleeding. The
physician recommended stopping breastfeeding and placing the infant on a
special formula.

My questions are:
1) Is this baby having an allergic response to proteins from foods the
mother is ingesting?
2) If this is the case will the removal of these foods allow the baby to
continue to breastfeed?
3) And if the mother eliminates these foods how long will it take for the
baby's bowel to return to a healthy state.
4) Also, this baby has GER, has anyone ever heard of this being related
to food allergies?

I appreciate the support anyone can give related to this issue.
Especially any medical references.
