When talking to RNs in my hospital about lactation education and the exam, their first question is "will the hospital pay for it?" If the education is given by a college or university, yes - if there is enough $$ in the budget that fiscal year.
If by a conference, no. And the hospital will not pay the exam fee.
They do not pay the RN's State license renewal either, but the RNs value that enough to pay it themselves. It amounts to less than $100 a year, paid bi-annually.
My conclusion: they are not so interested in the field of Lactation as to be willing to finance their own education, much less buy a text book.
That's my narrow, one-hospital experience.

curious: if multiple re-testing is an appropriate way to weed out
undesirable healthcare providers/educators, then why are, for example, RNs and
LCCEs not re-tested on a regular basis?
