Pam,

According to Hale, breastmilk chromium levels are independent of dietary
intake in the mother and apparently do not increase with increased
maternal intake. He also points out that newborns already have chromium
levels that are 2.5 times that of the mother.

Mom should have her blood sugar tested postpartum as gestational diabetes
is usually "cured" by the birth of the baby, although it can be an
indication that she may be at slightly greater risk of developing IDDM
somewhere down the line. Breastfeeding may help to delay or prevent this
from happening. Although chromium supplements are not a bad idea, much
more important I think would be an ongoing program of weight control and
good diet plus adequate exercise.
