Working in an Outreach situation, I definately saw the negatives of overuse
of the "prescription" or "advice" to use Lansinoh or PureLan. Women think
that it cures the sore nipples and often don't seek help to cure the actual
problem. All too often, soreness is treated as normal and then our moms go
"well, I used that stuff until I got a crack and it didn't seem to heal
it..and it hurt to bad to nurse," or some other such anecdotal evidence that
misuse does cause problems. No recommendation of use should be done lightly,
imo, and without the reminders that it is not a cure-all, but a soother until
problems can be fixed.
