Andrew

I'm sorry I have to disagree that co-trimoxazole is the first drug of choice
for otitis media, etc in the UK- obviously i can't comment on US regulations.
When my kids were little it was given out by the bucket full for just these
reasons but we now have a recommendation from the Committee on the Safety of
Medicines which states:

Co-trim should be limited to role of drug of choice in Pneumocystis carinii
pneumonia. It should now only be used for ACUTE ACERBATIONS of chronic
bronchitis and uti infections, ....and should only be used in acute otitis
media in children if there is good reason to prefer it"

it does say that adverse reactions are rare but recommends use of trimethoprim
(without sulphonamide component)
I cant remember that last time I dispensed it.

However this is off topic. The point that I wanted to make was that IMO the
comfort and nutrition which breastfeeding provides was greater or as great
anyway as value of antibiotics and it just makes me cross that breastfeeding
is not valued by so many medics. (obviously not you or you wouldnt be on
lactnet!) I dont know about levels of antibodies falling, there seems to be
some disagreement but I do know that I had it as a child and that my kids
thank God had it very mildly
