Me again,

Calling all vegetarians, vegans and wanna be's.

I just got off the phone with the mom whose baby has bloody stools and
crystals. We are going to compose a message to Lactnet while she is here
tomorrow, that outlines her son's situation. In the meantime I have another
question. She has gone completely vegan (among other restricted foods), at
the doctor's request.

As I came to veganism over a period of years, I could use some help on her
transition to veganism in just one week. The docs are worried about protein
intake among other things. She is taking some kind of rice protein powder
that they found at the health food store.

Looking at all my cookbooks, everyone assumes you will gradually change your
diet. She went from eating practically no beans to eating them everyday and
has gotten a little sick. :-) I was going to introduce her to things like
quinoa tomorrow. But I could sure use some help. I did suggest that she do
the big pot of rice, squash thing but I don't think she has done it yet. I
am hopeful we will be able to change from the doctor's perspective from "You
can't eat that" to "This is what I CAN eat."

I think our big question from the phone call is:
How long can a breastfeeding mother eat a really restricted diet and not
worry about counting protein, calories, vitamins, etc. So that she does not
feel pressured to supplement while this situation gets sorted out.

I welcome any and all suggestions, as does she.

Sincerely,
Nikki Simmons
