Hello Wise Ones,

I am searching for some information on Myasthenia Gravis, specifically
regarding potential transmission of maternal antibodies to the baby via
breastmilk. I am currently working with a mom who noticed progressive
weakness through her pregnancy and was just diagnosed with MG (she's not
on meds yet). Her term baby is a NICU patient due to hypotonia/transient
maternally-transferred MG. Mom has been providing breastmilk but the staff
have noticed that the baby seems to be getting weaker, not stronger. One of
them raised the question with me regarding possible direct effect of mom's
antibodies on the baby through her milk. I could find very little in the archives
about this specific question. Any thoughts???

Thanks,

Suellen Williams, RN, IBCLC
Franklin, Indiana, where the temperature is supposed to be in the teens
tonight!
