Royce,

I share your frustration. I have never been able to understand why some of
the docs feel that a baby must bottle feed first. In fact, our preemies are
on feeding protocols and those protocols state very clearly that babies may
only breastfeed once a day during the beginning of the protocols and then
they may work up to twice a day. We are lucky (really lucky) if any of our
infants go to breast more than once or twice a day. It's quite sad. Some
moms give up on breastfeeding altogether, stating that they just want their
babies out of the hospital. They believe that BRF will "mess up" their
baby's feeding pattern, thereby setting back the discharge goal. And
another problem I continue to see, over and over again is that many nurses
STILL (after many conversations) do not know how to do accurate pre and post
weights. And until they can do this correctly, they will not get accurate
results, which again sabotage BRF.

As for s2s, this is also a frustrating area for me. As a level II RN, I get
a lot of moms who have been told by their level III nurses that s2s is too
stressful for their babies. If their babies are having a lot of apnea or
bradycardia, they are not allowed to do s2s because they believe it stresses
out the baby. This is when the baby needs s2s EVEN MORE! But I think it's
inconvenient for many nurses or they just don't want to take the time to
facilitate it. Sad.

Sharing your frustration...
