She didn't manage to nurse him right away, although she tried, and
throughout the entire hospital stay the baby didn't nurse at all. They
were unable to hook up with the hospital's lactation consultant, for
whatever reason.
I first saw the baby at three days old. He is lively and alert. After
looking in his mouth I thought, perhaps, his tounge was a bit short
but I am leery of making snap diagnosis. If he has tounge tie, it is
not obvious. The mother has flattish nipples but I've seen much
worse.>

Yael, as well as looking into the short tongue/tongue tie with a
lacation consultant, I would also consider the circumstances of his
birth. Mama had an epidural, then pitocin, and then a vacuum
extraction - all because her labour was *too slow.*

(Please excuse me while I go bang my head against the wall to vent my
frustration and anger about modern birthing practices and sending home
a baby who cannot eat! There, that's better... to continue...)

Many babies who have been subjected to a vacuum extraction have
difficulties in nursing because of headaches, skull/jaw misalignment's
etc. Even though he is lively and alert, it might be helpful to find a
chirpractor who is familiar with such problems.
