C/Ss often have much to do with breastfeeding success as evidenced by
research.
As far as being nice to one another I have found the posts to be both kind
AND well thought out/articulated.
I read an article in the Boston Globe several months ago regarding the trend
towards elective C/Ss and found it to be disturbingly misleading. It mentioned
little of the incidence of C/S wound infection/dehiscence but instead focused
on the incontinence/loss of pelvic tone issues with vaginal births. While
working as a VNA nurse,my experience revealed opposite concerns- there was *AT
LEAST 1 mother at any given time* being followed by our MCH service for
packing/cleaning of wounds. We very RARELY visited vaginal birth Moms with medical
issues past the routine postpartum visit.
One particular Mom stands out . She was a 40yo primip mom of twins (34wks)
who spent 1mth after discharge with twice daily wound packing of 4-5ft (!) of
1/2in nugauze. She comes to mind because despite my help, this CLEARLY
sabotaged her 1 and only chance at breastfeeding. It also reminds me of another Mom
who upon delivering her 3rd child via C/S, was advised to have a tubal
ligation because of the fact that this baby almost died on the delivery table d/t
"too much scar tissue"according to Mom. She was advised NOT to breastfeed
because "it would be too taxing to her body" after such a difficult delivery. This
was to be her only breastfed child as her lifelong plan for 4 children was not
to be. HMMMMM, could these types of *complications* be under reported???
