this question and the responses to it are a good example of the difference
between an evidence based practice and extrapolating from personal
experience. when we work with mothers, we aren't there to tell them our own
experiences or fears or worries. we are there to give them correct
information. the phrase someone used "a baby can't bite if they are latched
on" is a good place to start. if you had a great deal of fear about being
bitten, and were bitten by your nursing child, but either put up with it or
solved the problem, that is your own story, but not what you base your advice
to patients on.

if i gave out the kind of poor advice that was given to me with my first
child, the hospitals would be - wow! they are still doing it! dang!
