i worked with an adoptive mom who successfully lobbied her insurance
company to fully pay for banked milk for her adopted baby! She wrote
letters and used the "preventive medicine" argument. The baby had no
illness, was not a premie, and was not allergic to formula. Mom was on
domperidone and was able to produce a fraction of what her baby needed, but
the rest was all banked milk. I am not sure how much effort the mom you
are working with put into to "fighting" the insurance company, but it might
be worth it. Especially in light of this baby's family history of breast
cancer, perhaps the statistics on the protective factors in human milk
might have more weight?

I'd be curious to hear about others' experience with insurance and banked
milk. I knew another adoptive family that put up a web site and put up
posters and got donor milk (casual but screened) for their baby through age
18 months at least. I understand that is a tough decision to make regardng
causal milk donation, but what about home pasteurization?

what a tenacious and dedicated mom this sounds like - i hope thing work out
wonderfully!
