Dear Fellow Lactnetters,

I just had a call from a women that has me stumped and I thought maybe you
could offer suggestions. The woman is 27yo, been on Synthroid for 3 1/2
years .15 daily. The hypothyroidism was diagnosed during her first
pregnancy. She was unable to breastfeed, said "My milk never came in."
She used as SNS for 3 weeks with no milk production of her own. At the
current time she has a week old baby, born at 8lbs 9oz, at 4 day weight
check 8lbs 4 oz. She nursed exclusively and on demand for 3 days, she
thought there was a bit of wetness on the nipple tip but could express no
colostrum and heard no swallowing. The baby went for 24 hrs without
urination and 3 days without a stool after mec at birth. At 4 days mom
started bottle feeding with formula after nursing for as long as the baby
would stay attached, approx 15-30 min. Mother has a normal menstrual
history and no history of infertility and no other medical problems, is
negative for breast surgery or implants. She felt her breasts enlarge
during the 1st trimester of pregnancies but then decrease a cup size during
the third trimester. She thinks she "has no milk ducts." She described
her breasts as soft with out any lumps. She has a visit with her OB
scheduled for Thursday so if I could get some suggestions before then I
would be grateful. I will do a search on past posts on thyroid problems
and no milk production.
