As others have pointed out, expressing milk allows the mother to do
something for her baby and her breasts will make milk regardless. I am
reminded of a story we published in the INFACT Canada newsletter a few years
ago about an Ontario mother with a very sick premature baby for whom she
expressed loads of milk. Sadly, the baby did not survive, and the mother
donated her milk to the milk bank and the BC Children's Hospital. The
mother said that knowing that her milk would help other babies was very
comforting and helped her through the grieving process.
