The test kits themselves state that they
were never intended to be used as a diagnostic. These test kits were
meant
to be used in conjunction with clinical signs and symptoms of disease.

I thought that HIV was AIDS except earlier and before there are
symptoms. So if the test is meant to be done in conjunction with
symptoms, it's not going to be very good as an HIV test. I don't know
much about the biology or chemistry of this, but I just want to make
sure I have the basic picture straight. I hadn't realized that the test
was not meant as a diagnostic but wasn being used as such.

Presumably the high (how high is it actually?) false positive rate is
why some women are reluctant to be tested in pregnancy. Do I have this
part straight? I have done some work on prenatal testing and why women
sometimes DON'T want certain tests, so this part is of interest to me
from that perspective. Do I have this part straight? Is there anything
written up on this?

Thanks,
   Naomi
