It does make one wonder if there would be similar results, but petroleum
jelly (typically called by its brand-name here), is a synthetic product,
which does not allow the skin to breathe. Frankly, I have never understood
why anyone would put this chemical on infant skin (or any skin, for that
matter). Lanolin does not have the same impermeability as petroleum jelly.
But, I am not a fan of lanolin and do not like the fact that it has come to
be used so routinely here.
