The proposed hand-out aims to be neutral, informative and supportive of
a woman's choice, even a decision to wean. But that implies that
weaning is not a big deal, or that maintaining a supply for a few days
is a huge hassle.

Maybe it would be more helpful to include factual information along the
lines of:
"Maintaining lactation during temporary separations is strongly
recommended. Protecting the breastfeeding relationship is important not
only for the baby's nutrition and health, but for the mother's
well-being. Abrupt weaning leads to painful engorgement, plugged ducts
and a high likelihood of mastitis. When the baby cannot be brought to
the mother for feedings, the mother should double pump with a
hospital-grade pump for 15 minutes. The breasts should be drained at
intervals similar to those in the mother's accustomed feeding routine."

Such information would help a mother realize that there are consequences
to weaning.
