Winnie Mading mentioned it doesn't have to be a choice between BF and
solids, but the timing is individual, such as taking the edge off
hunger.
Our second daughter preserved her "upon awakening" breasstfeeding until
she was weaned at 23 months due to my going away solo on a trip. She
needed this a.m. feeding in order to just be able to wait for breakfast
to be made. Once when on the phone with a neighbor and breakfast making
was delayed, she went limp in my arms. The neighbor suggested orange
juice immediately and it worked to perk her up.

Even after weaning she had continued low blood sugar symptoms and always
had to be fed if she became unbearable, something like cottage cheese
with fruit. If it had been stylish to BF for some years back then
(I didn't even know about extended feeding), she would have been the
ideal candidate.
