However, without the structure to support and maintain breastfeeding,
any campaign which actually aims to increase guilt for not
breastfeeding in a deliberate way, is likely to increase the guilt of
the women who fail to breastfeed. ..and as we see every day here,
personal guilt for this is
misplaced.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>........................

Good point made above about the need for support structure to optimize a BF
ad campaign's messages, .......however, ....my understanding is that the goal
is not <<actually aims to increase guilt for not breastfeeding in a deliberate
way>> the goal is to at least more frankly convey the risk of not BF, and even
more importantly, frankly convey the risk of formula feeding,
.........because, as indicated by research, people change negative behaviors based on the
realization of the *risk/negative effects* of that behavior.

I took a wild chance and asked Kathy Dettwyler to speak at our June LCAGW
meeting, she said yes!, and said to pick a topic from her list, .....I know many
of you have probably heard her talk on "Promoting Breastfeeding, Promoting
Guilt", but some of us (including myself) here in the DC metro area have not so
maybe we should pick that one, described on her web page;

<<Promoting Breastfeeding, Promoting Guilt- (1.25-1.5 hours) - A frank
discussion of the problem of health care professionals saying they don't want to
give mothers complete and accurate information about the risks of artificial
infant formula because they are worried about making mothers feel guilty about not
breastfeeding. Includes examples of how guilt is often used to promote
healthy behaviors in health advertising, and seeks to understand who is really being
"protected" from feeling guilty in the breastfeeding context. Ends with a
discussion of the distinction between guilt and regret, and steps for moving
beyond guilt.>>

What do you think: Does that sound perfectly relevant for ped/family practice
office staff, and hospital staff, *and* to help us prepare to formulate
objective and articulate responses to any of these guilt issues related to the ad
campaign?
