Dear Jena:

So much of everyday life must be a struggle for these women -- it's
wonderful that you can help make breastfeeding a positive experience.

As a resource, I just wanted to point out that the 1998 LLL Catalogue,
page 25, has a page of informational brochures under the heading "Low
Reading Skills," in English and Spanish. (I think these are fairly
new.) Also, consider some of the standard LLL pamphlets, such as the
inexpensive tear-off sheets, which might be straightforward and
accessible enough.

LCs working with nearby WIC support groups and Peer Counselor programs
may have pointers on what seems to click with their clients in these
difficult circumstances. Some Lacnetters suggested some games and
visual aids to organize the meeting, which might be a nicely
light-hearted, non-threatening approach.

The danger would be in appearing patronizing -- even new mothers with
low reading skills want to be taken seriously. What about treating them
just like any group of concerned mothers -- throwing out a
thought-provoking opening question to get them sharing their feelings
and experiences, while you stay in the background (providing information
tactfully as needed) as the mothers help each other. (This comes from
someone who's been burned repeatedly by "cute" meeting ideas, that die
slowly, slowly. Then someone brings up a good juicy breastfeeding
crisis and the discussion takes off. Maybe it's all in the
presentation....

Good luck.

Sincerely
Margaret Wills
