Re: the mother of the 1 month old baby who was expressing her milk and discarding it for fear of infecting the baby - if she has never had scabies before, it will take weeks from when she is infested before she develops the characteristic itch and visible rash, just like with head lice (another ancient, self-limiting and harmless though distasteful parasitic infestation). Meanwhile, the mites are already everywhere in her environment, in bed linens, on towels, in clothes - basically in anything an infected person's skin has come in contact with. One of the few ways they are *not* transmitted is through milk, so her discarding the milk is not going to prevent transmission and is depriving the baby of its rightful food.
The Wikipedia article on scabies is pretty informative, and had great, disgusting illustrations, including one of a case of 'Norwegian' scabies, which are an order of magnitude worse than just ordinary scabies. Live and learn; I never knew there was a special Norwegian version of this condition!
There is a list of remedies for scabies, and they may not even require prescriptions for all I know.
