I have permission to post by mom who is at her wits end to breastfeed. Mom
was dx with Hashimoto's thyroiditis in first pregnancy and then postpartum
thyroiditis after the baby was born. Mom had very low supply, only able to
supply 30% of milk for baby. Her endocrinologist said to pump more and just
wait it out, it would stabilize and get better. Her milk supply did finally get a
little better around 5 mths and then didn't need to supplement as much when
the baby started solids at 6 mths. Mom had tried pumping, fenugreek, and
reglan without seeing any help.

During her second pregnancy the endocrinologist had her on 75 mcg of
Levothyroxin. The first trimester her levels were low- like .06 or something.
(she doesn't recall for sure) During second trimester they went up to 2 and
have stayed within the normal range since during pregnancy. Her dr. said she
would check her again at 6wks pp. Her dr. also said she doesn't know how
she's going to treat the mom if she does get the postpartum thyroiditis again
because her levels will go up and down until it normalizes- so she'd have to
constantly be adjusting the medication. The biggest question mom (and me
too!) have is how often should she be tested pp? Is it the standard to just
wait it out (or not check until 6wks)and not adjust medication?

Currently what is happening: Mom is 10 days pp and everything was going
well. I saw mom very early on to work on latch to help make sure she gets off
to a good start and went over breastfeeding management. Baby was having
good diapers and good nursing until days 8 where the baby now fusses at
breast and no stools (only wets and even those are less) for 3 days. Mom is
off to get baby weight check today and get her levels checked. But mom is
nervous to meet with the dr and hear "wait it out" especially if there is
something else that can be done to help her milk supply.

Thank you all for any info regarding this.

*Mom not on other meds, not on birth control, baby has not had pacifier or
bottles. Even when mom had to supplement her first baby she used a
supplemate for two mths before finally doing bottles.
