Debi: I know Linda Alexander from various NIH projects. I was intending
on using her text, New Dimensions in Women's Health, for the Women's Health
class I teach until I discovered its limitations. First, it doesn't cover
breastfeeding. Second, it takes the very traditional, medicalized approach
to childbirth. Third, there is very little acknowledgement of the women's
self-help movement. Fourth, very little is mentioned about "alternative"
therapies/treatments. Sadly, neither the publisher nor authors were very
receptive to these comments. Instead, I use the Updated Our Bodies
Ourselves (Boston Women's Health Book Collective/Touchstone Press) and many
journal artices, plus fact sheets from La Leche League.
Maybe if others contacted the authors, they would be inclined on the
next edition to change.
