-Offer breast at low stress times for baby: sleepy, night time, etc.,
when baby is not
   super hungry
-Offer breast in bath tub
-Give some milk by bottle first, after 1/2 0z or 1 oz.or so, offer breast
-Massage or pump breast for a minute or two to stimulate a let down, so
the milk
  is 'right there' for baby
-May try nipple shield
-Only offer for a couple of minutes, don't fight with baby about this
-Offer breast many times during a bottle feeding, go back and forth if
baby wants
-Lots of skin to skin contact with mama
-Offer breast side-lying position during nap time or night time
-May try finger feeding as a transition from the bottle nipple to the
breast
-May try sns for extra milk initially

Some babies who have had the rapid immediate flow of milk from a bottle,
when they go to the breast and wait for the milk to let down, will
frown.........as if they are thinking "It's broken, where's the milk????'

The first week the baby may continue to want the bottle 75% of the time,
then the second week 50% of the time, then the third week 25% of the
time, then Voila! the fourth week baby will (cross our fingers) be 100%
back on the breast!!! (this was my experience with my daughter Natalie
who was a month premature in 1990 and got lots of bottles in the
NICU...........after all that effort I wasn't going to stop early!!)

Rob, feel free to print this out and give to your pt.
