I CAN'T STAND THIS! Sterilizing pump parts is over kill and ridicules.
Breast milk is not sterile. Once you take the pump parts out of the boiling
water (after 20 minutes of boiling) or the microwave bag, they are placed on a
non-sterile surface. Now, they are no longer sterile! Not to mention the
increase risk a mother may burn herself. CLEAN, that is the word we need to
emphasize to the mothers, not sterile.
These poor mothers who spend so much of their day sterilizing that other
activities get neglected. Then mothers feel that can't use their pumps or
expressed milk if they did not sterilize or they just cut back or stop expressing
due to the increase work.
We do not live in a sterile environment nor do our babies need a sterile
one. This mind set is back firing on us humans with more resistance to
organisms and the push for items such as the antibacterial soaps.
Getting off my soap box.
