For those of you not following this situation, a brief recap:

triplets born at 24 wks via surrogate in NICU not supportive of bfdg.
Mom inducing lactation, requested banked milk. Neo flatly refused. With
lots of data, info from other neos and persistence from mom, relented
recently and babies are getting banked milk for bolus feeds, but
continue to get formula for continuous feeds as neo fears nutrients will
be lost by sticking to tubing.

Just spoke to mom, Neo has ordered new pumps, when they arrive, only
banked milk will be given!!! Talk about your change in attitudes!
I am so thrilled with the tremendous progress made in the NICU due to
this mom, I could just "bust" :o)

I certainly hope that these babies, for their own benefit as well as
reinforcing the neo's new stance, do beautifully from here on out. The
girl had to undergo surgery on Thur. due to a perforated bowel. She had
been off of feeds entirely for 1 week due to extreme intolerance of the
formula. When she can resume feeds, this baby will receive nothing but
breast milk. Whew.

All babies are now on CPAP. I encourage mom to begin inquiring about
requirements for kangaroo care next.

I have to confess that when this whole ordeal began, I was feeling very
combative and somewhat disgusted with the attitude at this NICU
regarding breastmilk. It's not unusual for me to have very strong
reactions, that's how I'm made, but I have changed my tune. I am
beginning to be impressed at how far this neo has come in such a short
time. It wasn't long ago that he didn't allow preemies ANY breastmilk
at all. The first week of August, just a couple of weeks ago, banked
milk was completely out of the question and just look at how far he has
come. It takes a great deal of ego strength, in my opinion, to
completely reverse yourself in front of both patients and staff like
this.

This mom was just thrilled when I mentioned that some of you had sent
your congratulations to her. If any of you are interested in applauding
her efforts, please contact me directly with your words of praise, along
with permission to pass them on to her, I know it would be very special
to her to hear from you. Future scrap book material I'm sure.

Thank you Thank you Thank you for all of your wonderful support and
encouragement, and in some cases, helping tone down the responses I had
to all of this. You are a terrific group of people.
