Cathy,

Sorry to hear of your frustrating referrals, it is exasperating for us but
even sadder for the mother/baby who lose breastfeeding to ignorance. I
recently suggested to the mom whose toddler is having a T&A, that she get a
second opinion from an ENT I refer to for frenotomies and he told her
absolutely no BF after surgery (she subsequently talked with her original ENT
who had discussed BF after surgery with his colleagues and informed her that
BF post-op was ok, even admitted he learned something). I've yet to talk
with the ENT I know and perhaps will learn something from others posts re
your cases.

You stated, "I frequently refer to these docs, among others. Any ideas on
how to
diplomatically educate them? I already gave a copy of Hale's book to the
pediatrician's partner for their office."

How about a copy of the drug info from Hale directly to the doc involved with
a note that says something to the effect that "perhaps, you were unaware of
this information..." I did this with a pediatrician who told a mom she had
to express and discard her milk for a drug that was compatible and have done
this several times with similar situations. I never blame, just give the
info with a post-it that says FYI and perhaps you weren't aware. I never
hear back from the docs but they keep referring and telling moms
complimentary things about me so I assume I've done no damage and hopefully
enlightened them.

I think in your case though if these moms weaned due to docs' advice you
might be a bit stronger and say, "perhaps you weren't aware of the influence
your recent advice had on...and I am writing to let you know...such a
shame..." and include your frustration feelings "I was hoping your expertise
could enable this mother/baby pair to continue breastfeeding which would
provide them both with better health" (I know the better health isn't quite
right, it is normal health, but something along those lines).

This is the most frustrating and aggravating part of our jobs, I feel, and
now that I've been professional about it, I suggest you scream, pound a
pillow, and then breathe deeply before you write/call these colleagues.
