In my postpartum doula work I tell new moms that pumping (and feeding the
breastmilk in a bottle) before 3-4 weeks may cause the newborn to not open
wide at the breast any more and develop a shallow latch, hence sore
nipples/less milk. Pumping much after a month and the baby may have fallen
in with the breast to the extent that he may refuse the bottle altogether,
making it hard to leave him with another caregiver. I tell new fathers who
are in a hurry to bottle feed that it is with the father that the newborn
may first learn that love doesn't always have to come with food. I wish I
could remember where I first heard that, but I like it.
