Dear Lisa,

The concern over length of breastfeeding makes a great deal of sense for
little bitty babies who don't nurse efficiently yet--they truly cannot
afford to waste energy working at nursing when they don't get much for their
effort. I'm working with a little guy in that category. He gets to try
nursing for short bursts, but needs to be bottle-fed the majority of his
calories yet so that he doesn't waste the precious energy that he needs to
catch up.

It sounds like your client does not fall in that category, and so I would
expect that the burden of proof would be on the hcp who wants to take a
normal, term, getting-the-hang-of-it baby away from physiological feeding.

All the lit I have read on breastfeeding being easier, is aimed at vigorous
premies who can nurse if allowed to, and can get enough to thrive without
overtiring themselves. in some places premies are/were not permitted to
breastfeed until an arbitrary age/size.

All the best,
Lynn Carter SFO IBCLC
