I don't think the issue of breastfeeding past a year has much to do with
anything except cultural bias. There are many cultures that think nothing of
seeing a 1, 2, 3 or 4 year old child at the breast, but there are others that
can't fathom the idea of seeing anyone larger than newborn. I have had several
instances where my children were younger than six months, and the message was
given loud and clear to stop because the child was getting too big.

My favorite way to deal with people who had issues with self led weaning was
to use humor. My favorite answer to "How long are you planning to do that?"
was, "It depends upon whether he goes to the Junior College or a University!"
My goal as an LC is to assist each woman with her right to nurse her baby to
the extent that she chooses. I may have my feelings about how long that should
be, but I never impose them. No matter how long a mother nurses, the
benefits of breastfeeding are always
apparent.
