Being a Christian, I find troubling the allegations that Christians oppose
breastfeeding. In actuality, I find they are more likely to BF because they
believe and trust in a Creator who designed the human body--(species-specfic
milk attests to specfic creation). Why then the opposition to BF
legislation? Not being familiar with the Texas bill or Eagle Forum, I can
only surmise. Here in FL the BF bill was presented as purely a protective
measure--prompted by an article written by a freelance writer who was told
she could not discreetly breastfeed in a mall. Her article was GREAT (I have
it framed) --included all the benefits of BF, the WHO Code, and that formula
was disgusting not breastfeeding. The bill passed without problems. However,
when special interest groups attempt to push their own agendas and "use"
these bills it can undermine their intent and purpose. If public nudity
becomes the focus of the bill, then there will be oppostion as modesty is a
Biblical precept. Yes, the Lord was breastfed as was Moses, Isaac and
Samuel. But I don't believe that Mary, Jochebed, Sarah or Hannah "whipped it
out" indiscreetly. (JUDY, could this be the tie that binds the Jewish woman
in the kibbutz and women in the western world?) Let me say I am for
breastfeeding legislation that is designed to protect the breastfeeding woman
from harrassment but draw the line at protecting those who would parade down
the street naked in the name of breastfeeding. That "in your face" attitude
undermines what we are trying to accomplish. Again, I don"t know the
dynamics in the Texas bill battle -- I'm only saying that this is a possible
explanation of the opposition.
Breastfeeding quote for the day: "But Zion said, The LORD hath forsaken me,
and my Lord hath forgotten me. Can a woman forget her sucking child, that
she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may
forget, yet will I not forget thee." --Isaiah 49:14-15. God uses a
breastfeeding mom to picture the most perfect love of man.:) --Diane
