I would like to contribute one of my favorite analogies for mothers working
with frustrated, nipple confused babies. You are comfortable eating with a
knife and fork, and it is easy and efficient for you. Imagine that you have
moved to China, and are only allowed to eat with chopsticks. You can't use
your hands, or lick your plate, just use the chopsticks. Wouldn't you be
really frustrated for the couple of days it takes you to master the
chopsticks? Then, when you learn, you would eat just as easily any one else
in China. Often, the bottle can be like a knife and fork for the baby, and
the breast like chopsticks. For other babies, it is the other way around.
We just need to be patient while they learn, and don't give up.
