regarding CERPS and the IBLCE. Hope this makes things a little clearer. The
IBLCE ethics committee will be discussing this very important issue at our
August meeting, as there is a great deal of interest (and confusion) in the
subject of speaking at conferences where formula companies or bottle
companies may be sponsoring part of the meeting.

"First of all, the passage quoted in the Lactnet article,["IBLCE CERP
credits
may be awarded for relevant programs sponsored by qualified providers so
long as no manufacturer or marketer of artificial infant feeding products or
any other related person or entity exercises any control over the choice of
speakers, or exercises any control over the content of the program.  CERPs
will not be given for any presentation given by a speaker who has a
relationship with a manufacturer or marketer of artificial infant feeding
products." ] is outdated.  That policy was passed by the Board in April of
'94 and superceded, two years later.  Since April of '96, all we have
required for CERP credit is that speakers fill out a speaker disclosure form
revealing any apparent or actual/potential conflicts of interest, and that
these disclosures be printed in the program and/or syllabus.  Then audience
members may decide for themselves whether or not the competing interests
could influence the speaker's perspective or research findings."
