Hi all, my name is Myra, and I am new. I am a
breastfeeding support counsellor (for a year now). I
have 2 children of my own (Ben and Lily) who are 6 and
3, both breastfed (2 yrs and still, respectively).

I have an aquaintance who is concerned about her
baby's weight gain and was wondering if anyone would
have an idea of whether it is really worth worrying
about.

This is the information I have:

Baby is 6.5 months post birth, but was born at 33
weeks by c-section, and was in NICU for a while, while
mom pumped, was not allowed to bf at all to begin
with, and then later only once per day "so as not to
tire baby", (really bad hospital situation in
general), and had her milk thrown out often.

She is still 100% bf (no solids yet) from when they
came home (around about due date, I believe), and the
baby gained 100g. (about...3 oz? 4 oz?) per week for
quite a while.

The last visit to the paediatrician showed a weight
gain of "only" 250g. (about 8 oz) in 1.5 months. The
paediatrician is humming tunes of "insufficiant milk"
or "not rich enough milk" syndrome. ;-) The typical
run-around. The baby did grow more though, in length,
growing about 1.75 inches in total, in 1.5 months.

As for nursing sessions, the baby nurses on both sides
approx. 5 times during the day and 3 at night. During
this past 1.5 months' time, it was always directly at
the breast. Mom is returning to work (this past week)
and started giving 2 bottles while at work, of about
2,5 or 3 oz while at work during the day (to the
sitter) that baby drinks at noon and 3 pm. Baby seems
to be wetting diapers fine. Baby changes sides after
3-4 minutes sometimes, but not every time, and has
some colics, with straining, gas and seeming to have a
hard time passing it.

Mom was fitted with a progesterone-releasing IUD and
is wondering if this could be a source of problems.
Her ob/gyn said no, but as I've heard of the
occasional problem with mini-pills or depo shots, I
was not sure whether the amount in the IUD is enough
to do anything or not.

Mom says her "gut instinct" says that things are
fine...and I expect she's right, and that she'd notice
if her baby really wasn't feeling all that great...but
I just wanted to check with "the experts". I also
thought perhaps the baby is just getting to that stage
where she gains less quickly, and is perhaps more
alert and burning more calories... Just as an
aside...how far does a baby have to drop in
percentiles again before being classed FTT? Was it
3%, I can't remember!?

Thanks in advance!

Myra.
