Hi All!

I am very concerned about the story of the six year old being coerced
to continue nursing. Our society does a very good job at turning
breastfeeding into a "sexual" activity. Comments and innuendoes made toward
nursing mothers infer that the mothers REALLY like it. If this mother is
found guilty of child abuse then long term nursing mothers will have more
reason to stay "in the closet". I fear that any mother who nurses long term
will be considered abusive.

Our society needs to perceive nursing in an appropriate manner. Think
about it-- how long can a mother nurse before she is asked, "How long are you
going to do that?" Everyone is told that they have to try to breastfeed, and
as soon as a mother is into it-- people become concerned that she may turn
into one of those fanatics! Our culture is chock full of mixed messages--
Breastfeeding is best, but if you and your doctor should decide that you need
a formula... Our mothers get these messages on TV and the media. They are
having a field day with this 6 year old nursing story, and I am very
concerned about the outcome. -- Debbie Albert
