Elle Visits Hospital to Promote Breastfeeding

Supermodel Elle Macpherson visited a hospital maternity ward today, to encourage new mothers to breastfeed.

Ms Macpherson, UK ambassador for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), was shown around the maternity unit at the Royal Oldham Hospital, Greater Manchester, where she chatted to midwives and mothers.

She also presented the hospital with a Baby Friendly Award for its work in supporting mothers who want to breastfeed.

The model, who was appointed as the charity's ambassador to help promote breastfeeding, said the hospital's hard work had made a "big difference" to patients.

She said: "I've been so impressed by the commitment of the staff to the ideals of being Baby Friendly.

"It is a very high standard to have achieved and it is clear to me that it has made a big difference to mothers who give birth here.

She added: "I breastfed both my sons and I know it was the best start in life that I could have given them.

"However, many women do not get the help and support they need in order to breastfeed their babies, and this can be a major disappointment to them.

"It is great to see women in Oldham being offered the highest levels of support."
