Dear All:

As I understand from Kathy Dettwyler's previous posts critiquing the growht
curves - the problem is not that there were infants that were excluded
because they were fed ad libitum. Sorry if I wrote too hurriedly and gave
that impression. The problem is rather that few mothers are practicing the
type of breastfeeding we were probably originally designed to do, which
includes frequent night feeding in a cosleeping arrangement and completely
on cue feeding. Therefore, we don't know whether or not some of those
babies who were, however gently, coaxed to feed less at night and more
during the day, or to feed a little more a little less frequently than they
desired, might have gained at an even higher rate of growth than they did.

Best, Susan Burger, PhD, MHS, IBCLC
