Rachel:
# at last count 40% of one-year-olds in Oslo were being breastfed. #

Sanna-Mari:
I cannot remember for sure, but I think in Finland about 15 % of 1 year old
babies are breastfed. About 15 % of 4-month-olds are exclusively breastfed,
and in general, aroung the age of 4 months there is a clear decline in
breastfeeding figures ("lost my milk" legend, perhaps). Not to mention that
the current Finnish recommendation is 4 - 6 months exclusive bfeeding and
6 - 12 months total, which, imho, does not encourage bfeeding that much.

Rachel:
# Here, iron-fortified cereal is the dominant first weaning food. In Sweden
they give gruel in bottles, and I think the Danes start with potatoes. I
have no clue what the Finns do (Sanna-Mari, help me here!). #

Sanna-Mari:
:) there are other Finns on this list, too. Actually I am not sure which
one is more common, starting by giving gruel in bottle or smashed potatoes.
I started with my first one with corn porridge, if I remember correct.
However, it is not that uncommon to hear moms starting bottles of gruel - in
the hope of longer periods of sleep at nights - even at 2 - 3 months of age,
and what I find interesting is that moms often do not consider gruel as
solids! Perhaps we, too, are "a potato country" ;) , as smashed potato is
nearly always recommended (at child health clinics) as the first solid food
to start with. It is recommended for longer sleep, for greater weight gain
for small babies and large babies (because milk possibly cannot nourish a
baby this large) because baby is now 4 mo, belly ache, etc, sometimes some
nurses at the child health clinics do these recommendations way before the
officially recommended 4 months of age. Luckily there are those, too, who
support exclusive bfeeding for 6 months.

But in general, our breastfeeding figures (exclusivity (sp?) and duration)
are way behind of those in Norway.

PS. Thanks for the replies for my questions about the noisy breastfeeder
and the pre-eclamptic mom. I will tell more a bit later :) .
